More than two hundred forty programmes, close to 1000 stories, and the contributions of more than 30 reporters.
Since 2000, FocusAsia has traveled to nearly every country in Asia reporting on almost every conceivable issue. From the funny to the tragic. Issues of conflict and peace. Politics, economics and the environment. Endangered cultures and changing lifestyles. We've won awards, for human rights, child rights and even animal rights.
FocusAsia was conceived by Executive Producer Jim Laurie in late 1999 and went on the air in January 2000 as a one hour Sunday night magazine show on the STAR WORLD channel across Asia and the Middle East. Produced weekly by Producer Stephanie Scawen, it ended its run on STAR on July 25, 2004.
Since 2001, FocusAsia stories have also been seen on the National Geographic Channel and the reports continue to be aired on television stations of the Public Broadcasting System in the United States.
FocusAsia now is a production of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre of the University of Hong Kong. Thanks to a contribution from STAR Group Ltd., the programme is moving forward and re-launching as an educational, non-profit current affairs and documentary series about Asia.
Still led by Executive Producer Jim Laurie, FocusAsia seeks to provide two services. It is an educational tool for students of television journalism at the University. With the help of aspiring students and veteran professionals, FocusAsia also aims to maintain a reputation for quality television informing a wider audience about key issues affecting the region.
We hope you will help support our programme. FocusAsia seeks partners so that its educational and public interest mandate may be expanded and fulfilled.
